An increasing number of people are changing careers during their working life. What do you think are the reasons of this? Is it a positive a negative development?

Word count: 353

Workers now migrate from job to job over their career in search of greater fulfillment and compensation.I think there are a host of contributors of this tendency and we should embrace it with optimism rather than sceptism.

The job outlook is the main factors that lead to career change. Statistics predict whether employment in an occupation will grow, decrease, or stay the same over a decade is based on current and forecasted economic and other factors. While the future may have looked promising for one’s field when he/she entered it, changes in technology, the economy, or the industry can later impact it. Perhaps job opportunities are no longer plentiful, and when we research future predictions, we learn that conditions are going to continue to deteriorate. The other reason for career shift is that the purpose for work currently has extended beyond making a living or being a breadwinner to achieve self-actualisation. In the past, people tended to stay in an industry in order to avert job insecurity, while with the increasing abundance in our life, currently we are more inclined to work for better self, which means that more occupation will be tried before we encounter the career we are willing to devote to.

From my perspective, this tendency is inevitable and promising despite some undesired consequences. Career change can help individuals to fit themselves in the profession they have aptitude and passion for, thereby unleashing their potential to achieve the best both for themselves and their employers. With more motivation, the efficiency and productivity of the whole society would be fueled. Besides, starting the other career can also ease the job fatigue caused by humdrum repetition of employees’ daily routine. Because of the novelty in the new job, one can experience a different company atmosphere, upgrade his/her skill set and then disperse the boredom and frustration of their former job. Thus, the overall happiness of people will be improved, contributing positively to the social welfare.

In conclusion, the objective circumstances and personal ambition are two reasons prompting career change, which, to a large extent, is a boon to majority of us.
