W:Well,I get up very early, around five 0’clock,because… M:Five 0’clock!Even on weekends?Do you do that often? W:Oh,yes, nearly every weekend.I never sleep late. There is just too much to d0.I hate waking up late. Even on weekends. And then I sometimes go for a long swim in my pool, when I don’t go for a run.Exercise is very important to me. M:At five 0’clock in the morning you go for a run? W:Yes,sometimes,or as I said, sometimes go for a swim. M:0K…and then? W:Well, then I have breakfast, and after breakfast I get down to work. M:Oh,you work on weekends, too? W:Oh,yes,I always work on weekends. M:But don’t you ever relax? W:Relax? M:You know, take the day off and have a good time, enjoy yourself?Go to a museum or to the park or something. W:Oh,n0.I never go to the museum. But I enjoy myself.I always enjoy myself at work. M:Well,OK.Thank you,Lily Tarkis.Bye-bye. Part B Until the twentieth century cigarettes were not an important threat to public health.Men used tobacco mainly in the form of cigars, chewing tobacc0,piping tobacco and snuff. Most women did not use tobacco at all. The cigarette industry began in the l870s with the development of the cigarette manufacturing machine. This made it possible to produce great number of cigarettes very quickly, and it reduced the price.Today cigarette smoking is a widespread habit.About 43%of the adult men and 31%of the adult women in the United States smoke cigarettes regularly. It is encouraging to note, however, that millions of people have given up the smoking habit.75%of the male population and 46%of the female population have smoked cigarettes at some time during their lives, but 26%of these men and 11%of the women have stopped smoking. The number of persons who have given up smoking is increasing. Men as a group smoke more than women.Between men and women the age group with the highest proportion of smokers is the age group 24~44.Income,education,and occupation all play a part in determining a person’s smoking habit.City people smoke more than people living on farms. On the one hand, well—educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer Years of schooling and lower incomes.on the other hand,if a well-educated man with a higher income smokers at all,he is likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes per day. The situation is somewhat different for women. There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower income and lower educational groups. These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily.Part C Questions ll~13 are based on a taped library tour. You now have l5 seconds to read Questions ll~13. In many places, ice is as widely used as bread, and it would be surprising indeed if ice did not give birth to many special phrases. The expression,“to break the ice”,meant,to make your first move,to do something for the first time: it was not possible until the ice was broken.Later, the expression developed another meaning, covering a relationship between people. When you have not broken the ice with someone, you have not yet cleared the way to his trust in you,to his friendship. You must get through to him, just as the small boats had to clear the fiver’S ice jam. When you tell someone that he“cuts no ice”with you.you are making certain things clear to him__________that you are not moved or impressed or influenced by him in any way.You are putting it to him straight__________that he is getting nowhere with you. “Skating on thin ice”is something else again. This means that a man may be doing or saying some- thing risky. It might be offensive and get him into trouble.Thin ice is not much support;if he is not more careful,he may sink right through. In sports or any other kind of contest, you will hear the phrase,“The game is on ice”or“It is iced up”.This simply means that the game is really over, that one side is so far ahead that the other cannot catch up.There is no longer any doubt as who the winner will be. Questions l7~20 are based on a conversation about hunting an apartment. You now have 20 seconds to readQuestions 17~20. M: Hi,I heard you’re looking for a different apartment. W: Veak The place I’m in now is really terrible. M:It was 0K when l was there. W:The boiler keeps breaking and when it does,we lose the heat for several days at the time. M:Why doesn’t the owner replace it? W:Well, she said it’s cheaper to keep fixing it.She is a nice enough person, just sort of stingy in any case.I’m sick of being cold. M:Can you get your deposit back if you move? W:If I give one-month notice,I can get the whole thing back. M:So what kind of place are you looking for? W:I think Hl try to get into one of those highrises near the university. There is nothing really special but at least they are new and functional. M:I heard those buildings are pretty noisy. The walls are thin and you can hear everything going on in the other apartment. W:Oh.That will never do.I need some place quiet to finish my thesis.I guess Hl have to look at somemore ads.Maybe new isn’t necessarily better. M:Why don’t you try some of those apartment at Windsor? They’re supposed to be nice. W:Oh,aren’t they awfully expensive? M:Not really.You’11 be surprised at how reasonable some of them are.The problem with being out there is the bus doesn’t run that way. W:That definitely won’t be a problem.I can afford a car right now.I guess I’d better check a few places here in the citv before I make fl decision. Section I Listening Comprehension Part A 1.5/five。 I get up very early, around five 0’clock,因此填入five或用阿拉伯数字。 2.pool。 And then I sometimes…in my pool。 3.breakfast。 4.relax。 男士的not ever relax即是never relax,因此本题应填入relax。 5.museum。 I never go to the museum。 Part B 6.In the 1870s。 The cigarette industry began in the l870s with the development…,即烟草工业开始于l9世纪80年代。 7.About 43%/About forty-three percent。 About 43%of the adult men…smoke cigarettes regularly(美国约43%的成年男性和31%的成年女性经常吸烟)。 8.Income,education,occupation。 Income.education,and occupation all play a part…(收入、教育程度和职业都在决定一个人的吸烟习惯上起着作用)。 9.24~44/twenty-four to forty-four。 在独自中部有一句指出:lax-tween men and women the age group with the highest proportion of smokers is the age group 24 44(男女之间烟民比例最高的年龄段是24岁到44岁)。 10.Highly educated。 These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily(这些受教育程度更高的女性吸起烟来更厉害)。 Part C 11.[B]。 On level tw0. you will find our circulation desk, current periodicals and journals…,其中用的是current periodicals(当前的期刊),不但要求考生听清这一句,还要求考生能在这两种表达中进行有效的转换理解。 12.[C]。 Our science and engineering sections can be found on level three,因此本题答案就是[C]。 13.[B]。 独自倒数第三句提到了借书过期不还的惩罚性措施:There is a 50一cent—a-day late fee for overdue books up to a maximum of$15.O0,即每天收费jo美分,但最高不超过15美元。 This means that…something risky,与[明一致。 15.[B]。 其中最后一句指出用这个短语的人的意思....that he is getting nowhere with you,因此答案是[B]。 16.[A]。 The game is on ice和It is iced up两个与ice有关的短语的说明,因此本题答案无疑是[A]。 17.[D]。 18.[A]。由女士话语中的near the university、finish my thesis可推知她是一名大学生,因此选[A]。 19.[A]。南第二个话轮中女士we lose the heat for several days at the time一句及第三个话轮中女士说的I’m sick of being cold可以推知说话时天气应当很冷,因此选[A]。 20.[C]。 I need some place quiet to finish my thesis,因此答案是[C]。
